Studying poetry shows that the sounds of words, as well as their meanings, can contribute effectively to description. Sound patterns include rhythm, meter, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, parallelism, and refrain. Structure and form are also important elements in poetry. Students see that authors from other parts of the world have their own unique view of the themes common to man as seen through their use of poetic elements. Students complete various writing assignments in which they will analyze a poem closely, compare two poems, identify various poetic elements, or trace an idea or theme throughout the pieces they have read.
